Why do we seek comfort in the rain? Petrichor.

It is amazing how Mother Nature seems to be able to keep us calm and provide comfort amidst a wet, thundery weather. It is definitely not the bit with wet hair that attracts us (perhaps for some), but the smell of rain.

Did you know that…

“The human nose can detect ozone concentrations as little as 10 parts per billion.”

Today, we explore the smells of rain and what exactly is behind the petrichor smell of a gloomy weather. Petrichor was coined from Greek Petros, meaning “stone”, and ichor, meaning “the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods”.

So, what makes “Petrichor”? Namely, wet earth, plants and lightning bolts!
